What is a Location Messaging Unit?

Posted by Erin Hodges On December - 30 - 2009

Location Messaging UnitA Location Messaging Unit (or black box) is an alternative to GPS integrated into a phone.  These small but powerful devices constantly track vehicle location.  Location Messaging Units are perfect for businesses that need to track vehicles and not employees.  They’re also ideal if a cell phone isn’t necessary because only one data plan is required.  Some typical features of Location Messaging Units include:

  • Built-in GPS
  • Push-to-Call- Dispatcher and 911
  • SMS
  • Vehicle Powered
  • Speaker phone

3 Mobile Device Components for GPS Tracking

Posted by Erin Hodges On December - 23 - 2009

GPS-enabled MC70Several of our past posts have provided information about the benefits of GPS tracking, but do you know what device components you need for GPS tracking?  Any phone or ruggedized Enterprise Digital Assistant you choose to deploy will require these 3 components for success:

  1. A mobile client to capture latitude and longitude coordinates and store them when out of cell coverage.
  2. A data plan to transmit the latitude and longitude coordinates to the back office server.
  3. A back office software solution that will interpret and display the raw GPS data in a meaningful way.

DecisionPoint solutions meet these requirements by providing GPS-enabled devices, back office integrated software and we work with all tier 1 wireless carriers.

LTE (Long Term Evolution)

Posted by Erin Hodges On December - 17 - 2009

LTE (Long Term Evolution)In our Oct. 15th post we provided a wireless data technology overview that summarized data throughputs by standards and generation.   4G- the next generation of cellular networks is making quite a splash in the news and today I’d like to provide more information about LTE or Long Term Evolution.

LTE promises to not only make existing applications faster, but provide a wealth of applications previously only available on a wired connection.  LTE offers amazingly high data rates and sector throughputs that meet the demands for wireless broadband that consumers are looking for, such as:

  • More connectivity
  • More customized content
  • More product capabilities

LTE is a leading technology that can deliver what consumers want while also delivering a low cost per bit for operators.  LTE is seeing increased popularity among carriers and the first LTE networks are expected to be commercially launched in the very near future.
