Mobile Point of Sale (POS) Solutions

Posted by Erin Hodges On March - 16 - 2010

Reduce customer wait time and increase loyaltyLong lines and increased traffic in retail environments can lead to decreased customer loyalty and abandoned sales.  If you’re looking for a solution that will prevent long lines and increase retention rates, a Mobile Point of Sale (POS) solution is the answer.  Mobile POS solutions enable your workforce to ring up customer purchases virtually anywhere in the store to prevent long waits.  With a mobile computer and mobile printer in-hand employees can:

  • Ring up purchases
  • Accept payment (with the addition of a snap-on magnetic stripe reader)
  • Print detailed receipts

Mobile POS solutions also enable line busting to shorten wait times. With line busting, a customer’s merchandise is scanned ahead of time, suspended and later retrieved at a fixed POS lane.

MC9500-K MAX FlexWAN

Posted by Erin Hodges On March - 12 - 2010

MC9500-K MAX FlexWANWhen Motorola released the MC9500-K mobile computer they also introduced several new features to address issues such as flexibility and investment protection.  We provided information about one of these new features, the Universal Accessory System, in our Feb. 18th post.  Today we’re going to take a look at the new MAX FlexWAN for the MC9500-K.

The revolutionary MAX FlexWAN provides the flexibility to switch wireless WAN technology and carriers in minutes.  Now you can swap networks in a few simple steps so devices are no longer permanently associated with one network (such as GSM or CDMA) and a specific network technology (such as GSM EDGE or CDMA EVDO-Rev A).  With MAX FlexWAN you have the freedom and flexibility to easily switch wireless technologies when your business needs change.  Increase customer service levels and reduce costs in five simple steps!

2D Bar Code Basics

Posted by Erin Hodges On March - 11 - 2010

There are two main categories that 2D bar codes fall into- stacked 2D codes and matrix 2D codes.

PDF417 Stacked 2D Bar CodeStacked 2D Codes

Stacked symbologies resemble a set of linear bar codes literally “stacked” on top of each other.  The most common stacked symbology is PDF417, pictured at right.

Data Matrix CodeMatrix 2D Codes

Matrix symbologies like the Data Matrix at right, are made up of a pattern of cells that can be square, hexagonal, or circular in shape.  In most cases, matrix bar codes offer higher data densities than stacked bar codes.

Although different in many ways, the intent to encode more information in a smaller space is the same and so are the following benefits:

  • Capacity- 2D codes allow you to store more data in a smaller space than 1D codes
  • Portability-  2D codes don’t require database access for decoding, instead data travels with the item
  • Flexibility- compact matrix 2D codes can be read on curved surfaces
  • Increased efficiency- increased data capacity and flexibility make goods move more quickly
  • Emerging standards- new standards set the stage for millions of new products to be marked by 2D symbols in the coming years

Mobile Solutions for Parking Enforcement

Posted by Erin Hodges On March - 10 - 2010

Parking Enforcement Mobile SolutionsMany parking enforcement officers write out tickets by hand and then the information is transferred to the main system by data entry clerks back at the station.  This system is time consuming and allows for human error.   By automating the citation process, officers instead enter information on a mobile computer by scanning bar codes, drop-down menu functions, or by hand-keying.  Mobile computers enable accurate collection of information, including:

  • Violation type
  • Vehicle information
  • Location of violation
  • Image capture to document infraction

The violation information is automatically sent to the back office in real-time and a citation can be printed on the spot with a mobile printer.  This application increases the accuracy of citations entered into the main system and improves productivity.
