Factors Driving 2D Imager Growth

Posted by Erin Hodges On September - 30 - 2011

At the beginning of the year, VDC Research Group listed 2D imagers as one of the top 5 trends for the bar code solution market in 2011, saying that “mobile marketing initiatives and continued investment in both retail and industrial use environments will be key drivers for 2D imaging solutions in 2011.”  And VDC expects the investment in 2D imagers to outpace laser scanners and linear imagers in the coming years.

There are several key factors driving the growth of 2D imagers, one in particular is to address anticipated application requirements.  The use of 2D symbologies has increased and 2D imagers “future proof” investments by providing a flexible scanning solution.  Businesses looking to provide more information and documentation will find that 2D imagers capture more types of data, such as:

Mobile Solutions for Facilities Management

Posted by Erin Hodges On September - 29 - 2011

Facilities management encompasses a wide range of functions to ensure that commercial and institutional buildings are functional and safe.  Keeping track of work orders, inspections and assets can become quite cumbersome when done manually.  Mobile and wireless technologies improve facility management operations by enabling the accurate tracking of work orders, inspections and assets in real-time.  Mobility extends crucial job specific information to mobile workforces and keeps them connected to back office data while on-the-go.  Mobile workers can access:

  • Tasks
  • Job information
  • Inventory status
  • Material management
  • Maintenance procedures and repair manuals

And much more!

Mobile Bar Codes Improve Sales at Quick Serve Restaurants

Posted by Erin Hodges On September - 28 - 2011

According to Juniper Research, the total mobile coupon redemption value will reach $6 billion in 2014, nearly double the $3.4 billion in 2010.  Mobile bar code programs save customers time and money by extending promotions to their mobile phones, the one item that is rarely forgotten at home.  In the past we’ve discussed the benefits that mobile coupons provide to retailers, but they’re also being used to drive sales in hospitality.

In the fast paced environment of quick serve restaurants it is critical to keep register lines moving.  Mobile bar codes are captured quickly and there is no need to search for paper coupons or plastic loyalty cards.  Quick Serve Restaurants have begun utilizing mobile bar codes to replace items such as:

  • Paper coupons
  • Game pieces
  • Loyalty and gift cards

And mobile bar codes are also being used to provide consistent brand awareness to drives sales.

Lower Insurance Premiums with Detailed Driver Behavior

Posted by Erin Hodges On September - 27 - 2011

In a previous post I provided information about how vehicle telematics enables the effective management of fleets.  In addition to reducing fuel consumption and tracking vehicle maintenance to save fleets money, telematics is also being used to reduce costly insurance premiums.  I recently read an interesting post on the SmartVan that stated “some telematics companies are working in tandem with insurance companies to produce detailed analytical driving behavior reports that can be used to customize insurance policies for consumers and commercial fleets.”

Fleet Management Solutions with vehicle telematics provide detailed driver information that can be used as proof of good driving.  Driving patterns, speed, hard braking and more is captured in real-time and can be used to reward safe fleets with discounted premiums.
