Enterprise Software Application Success

Posted by Erin Hodges On February - 1 - 2012

I recently read a very interesting article in Computerworld that described the ways the rules for enterprise software applications are changing.  Computerworld offered 3 new rules for enterprise software to be successful.  These included:

  1. Make it appealing – Enterprise software must be user-friendly and work well on all commonly used browsers and mobile devices.  According to Gartner analysts, business strategies for application development need to consider three user groups: B2B, B2E (employee) and B2C (consumer).
  2. Make it transparentReal-time data is more important than ever before.  Employees that have access to up-to-date information have a competitive advantage.  In addition to real-time data, users are also interested in having information presented in graphical form with tables and charts.  These analytic tools help users discover trends and improve decision-making.
  3. Update it often – Employees expect and want frequent updates to the applications they use. And with the increasing use of cloud-based software, updates are easier than ever to push out to users.

Bar Code Wristbands for Infant Safety

Posted by Erin Hodges On July - 28 - 2011

In our July 15th post I provided information about the best practices for creating bar code wristbands to ensure that they contain the right data needed to increase patient safety. Bar code wristbands are designed to improve patient safety regardless of age. However, maternity wards need tailored solutions to ensure that the wristbands don’t harm a newborns delicate skin. DecisionPoint’s partner Zebra Technologies recently wrote a blog post about this very issue and provided these important tips for implementing infant wristbands:

  • Soft-wristbands must be soft, non-abrasive and hypoallergenic.
  • Sizable-wristbands must be adjustable so they can fit infant’s wrists depending on birth weight.
  • Scannable Flat Tab-a flat surface on the tab of infant wristbands ensures that there is room for both 2D and linear bar codes and can be scanned from any angle without disruption.
  • Data-infant wristbands should include 1D bar codes that contain data such as birth date, sex, age and should associate the baby with the parents.
  • Check Codes-wristbands that include both a visible and bar code check code should be used so nurses can easily identify a match between an infant and parent.

Bar Code Wristbands for Patient Safety

Posted by Erin Hodges On July - 15 - 2011

In our post Monday I provided information about the benefits that bar coded wristbands provide to a variety of hospitality venues such as amusement parks and water parks.  Bar coded wristbands are most often associated with the healthcare industry and are used to increase patient safety and the accuracy of medication dispensing at the point of care.   In order to realize all of the benefits of bar code wristbands and to ensure patient safety, there are a few best practices to follow.  DecisionPoint’s  partner Zebra Technologies has compiled the following list of best practices to ensure your patient wristbands contain the right information and meet industry mandates.

  1. Repeat 2D bar codes across the wristband
  2. Use two linear bar codes
  3. Include human-readable text
  4. Include the medical record number and financial institution number
  5. Include check-digits for security
  6. Include print time and other traceable text
  7. Use thermal print on-demand printers

2D Bar Code Tracking Solutions for Surgical Equipment

Posted by Erin Hodges On June - 7 - 2011

Surgical tools are expensive and making sure all equipment is accounted for throughout regulatory sterilization and re-kitting is critical to healthcare facilities.  Marking metal tools with a Direct Part Mark (DPM) speeds up the process of re-kitting and reduces human error.  Digital imagers capable of reading 2D Direct Part Marks enable healthcare facilities to:

  • Easily track expensive equipment
  • Ensure tools are properly sterilized
  • Ensure tools are returned to the correct surgical kits
  • Increase patient safety
