VeriFone Acquires Global Bay

On Nov. 1st, VeriFone announced the acquisition of Global Bay Mobile Technologies. DecisionPoint’s partner Global Bay is an industry-leading provider of next-generation mobile retail solutions. According to the press release, Global Bay’s technology, coupled with VeriFone’s secure mobile payment technology, will offer retailers an unparalleled comprehensive and integrated suite of mobile applications that will transform the in-store retail experience. These applications include Mobile POS, Clienteling, and Store Inventory Management.

This is the latest development in VeriFone’s strategy to bring the power of mobile into the world of retail and payments, extending new smartphone- and tablet-based shopping and payment experiences to retail organizations. Global Bay will operate as an independent business unit within VeriFone.

Motorola Solutions Announces Enterprise-Grade ET1 Tablet

Motorola Solutions recently unveiled the Android-based ET1 Enterprise Tablet.  The ET1 is designed for demanding all-day use and brings the familiarity of a consumer-class user experience to the enterprise.  Enterprise-class features include:

  • Durable design to withstand multiple bumps and drops during a workday
  • Optional integrated bar code scanner and magnetic stripe reader
  • Front- and rear-facing cameras
  • Availability of Bluetooth-connected handheld bar code scanners, mobile payment readers and mobile printers
  • Optional hand strap for comfortable full-shift handling

The Motorola Solutions ET1 Tablet will be available in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Apparel RFID Growth

A new market report on companiesandmarkets.com titled “Apparel RFID 2011-2021” that provides a detailed analysis and 10 year forecasts of apparel RFID, reports that apparel RFID will grow at double the rate of the overall RFID market through the next ten years.  According to the report, the RFID tagging of apparel is now the largest and fastest growing application of RFID in retailing, the retail supply chain and associated industries. The report forecasts that the market for tagging retail apparel will grow to demand 20 billion RFID tags annually in 2021.

Macy’s Launches QR Code Campaign

Macy’s recently launched their new Backstage Pass campaign that utilizes 2D QR codes to provide access to fashion advice and tips from style icons.  Macy’s is just one of many retailers adopting QR codes to differentiate themselves by providing a more interactive shopping experience.  Retail Touchpoints also recently reported on the growing use of Microsoft Tag 2D bar codes.  According to a recent report by IHL Services and RetailConnections, this type of enhanced marketing is on the rise, with 21% currently using 2D bar codes and an additional 40% saying they have plans to add the technology within the next 12 to 24 months.

Factors Driving 2D Imager Growth

At the beginning of the year, VDC Research Group listed 2D imagers as one of the top 5 trends for the bar code solution market in 2011, saying that “mobile marketing initiatives and continued investment in both retail and industrial use environments will be key drivers for 2D imaging solutions in 2011.”  And VDC expects the investment in 2D imagers to outpace laser scanners and linear imagers in the coming years.
