Factors Driving 2D Imager Growth

Posted by Erin Hodges On September - 30 - 2011

At the beginning of the year, VDC Research Group listed 2D imagers as one of the top 5 trends for the bar code solution market in 2011, saying that “mobile marketing initiatives and continued investment in both retail and industrial use environments will be key drivers for 2D imaging solutions in 2011.”  And VDC expects the investment in 2D imagers to outpace laser scanners and linear imagers in the coming years.

There are several key factors driving the growth of 2D imagers, one in particular is to address anticipated application requirements.  The use of 2D symbologies has increased and 2D imagers “future proof” investments by providing a flexible scanning solution.  Businesses looking to provide more information and documentation will find that 2D imagers capture more types of data, such as:

Mobile Printers in the Warehouse

Posted by Erin Hodges On June - 6 - 2011

In our May 26th post, I included a great video from Datamax O’Neil that showcases the RL4 rugged mobile printer.  Rugged mobile label printers like the RL4 are ideal for warehouses because they increase efficiency and reduce errors while withstanding harsh conditions.  Typical warehouse processes that can be improved with mobile printing include:

  • Receiving-printing labels at the point of receiving eliminates trips back and forth to a stationary printer.  This reduces errors and ensures that 100% of incoming items are labeled.
  • Putaway-integrated solutions that involve mobile printers, mobile computers and wireless networks enable employees to enter label requests, update inventory and receive information to print appropriate labels via the handheld device and mobile printer.
  • Picking-printing bar code labels at the point of picking speeds up the sorting of items for shipment.

Streamline Warehouse Operations with the Motorola MT2000

Posted by Erin Hodges On June - 2 - 2011

The adoption of 2D bar codes is growing, but 1D codes will be around for the foreseeable future.  Having multiple devices for each type of code isn’t practical or cost-effective.  A single device that can be used for 1D and 2D codes and can also capture both near and far codes is essential to streamline warehouse operations.  The Motorola MT2000 Series of mobile terminals offers highly flexible devices that function as both a scanner and a mobile computer.  The MT2000 Series eliminates the need for separate bar code scanners and key features include:

  • 1D laser scanner performs up to 50 inches away and on damaged and worn bar codes
  • 2D imager captures 1D and 2D bar codes as well as signatures, images and video
  • High speed bar code scanning
  • Same drop, tumble and temperature specifications as Motorola’s high-end rugged devices
  • Bluetooth® technology for cordless connection to host device up to 300 feet away
  • High resolution, high contrast QVGA Display

Check back tomorrow to watch a great video from Motorola Solutions that provides more information about the versatile MT2000 Series and how it can streamline processes throughout the warehouse.

RFID in the Warehouse

Posted by Erin Hodges On April - 6 - 2011

In our November 24, 2010 post I provided information about the tracking of Returnable Transport Items (RTIs) with RFID.  RFID technology can be utilized in other areas of warehouse operations and increases visibility, tracks assets and inventory in real-time and helps workers locate products quickly.  With fixed RFID readers, forklift mounted RFID readers and RFID containers, inventory can be tracked from the time it enters the warehouse all the way through to delivery. This video from Motorola provides additional information about the uses for RFID technology in warehouses and the benefits you will realize from a smarter warehouse.
