RFID and GPS Provide Detailed Tracking

Posted by Erin Hodges On December - 28 - 2010

Combine RFID and GPS for detailed tracking of itemsRFID and GPS are powerful technologies on their own, but many companies are realizing the benefits of combining these two technologies to enable detailed tracking of items.  Products with RFID tags can be read as they exit the warehouse or distribution center and can continue to be monitored via GPS within vehicles, providing improved visibility.  GPS-enabled RFID readers can also be used to record additional information, such as point of origin coordinates, which can be loaded to the RFID tag.  In the four walls and on the road, combining RFID and GPS can provide end-to-end visibility for food traceability, asset tracking and supply chain management.

Transportation Management Systems for Retailers

Posted by Erin Hodges On November - 22 - 2010

Transportation Management Systems handle the logistics of moving inventory from a DC to a store with mobile computing systemsIn our November 16th post I provided information about the two typical segments of mobile retail solutionsIn-Store Systems and Distribution Systems.  Today I’d like to take a closer look at one type of distribution center solution, Transportation Management Systems.

Transportation Management Systems include mobile computing systems which are used in all functions related to handling the logistics of moving inventory from a distribution center to a store.  Mobile computing and scanning systems used in Transportation Management Systems typically include the following functions:

  • Yard Management
  • Traffic Management
  • Dispatch and Routing
  • Vehicle Location-Based Services
  • Vehicle and Driver Logs

Transportation Management Systems streamline operations and ensure that your products are positioned in your stores when your customers need them, so you can maximize profits.

Mobile Solutions for Home Delivery and Installation

Posted by Erin Hodges On November - 9 - 2010

Provide your professional installation team with the tools they need to improve customer satisfactionMobility provides a variety of ways for delivery and installation crews to better serve customers.  When a consumer purchases an item that must be professionally installed, they want it done right and in a timely manner.  With a mobile device in hand, field workers have access to detailed information about the work order in real-time.  Eliminating paper processes and providing your workers with mobile devices enables:

  • Efficient routing and dispatching
  • GPS capabilities
  • Access to detailed work orders
  • Access to installation diagrams
  • Signature capture for proof of completion

When combined with a mag-stripe reader and mobile printer, field workers can even process payments in the field and provide customers with a receipt on the spot.  Access to detailed job tickets also enables employees to upsell while on location by offering warranty agreements during installation.

Increase Driver Safety with GPS Tracking Solutions

Posted by Erin Hodges On September - 29 - 2010

Increase safety with GPS tracking solutionsIn the past I’ve provided information about the features and benefits of GPS tracking solutions, but today I’d like to focus on how GPS technology increases safety and reduces liability for large fleets.

According to the Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) that was undertaken jointly by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding is a factor in nearly 23% of all at-fault large truck accidents.  With the ability to track driver speed in real-time and receive alerts about drivers that have exceeded posted limits you can significantly reduce the chance of accidents.

The LTCCS also reported that driver confusion or unfamiliarity with roadways was a factor in 21.6% of all at-fault large truck crashes.  GPS technology reduces confusion and provides drivers with mapping applications and turn-by-turn directions, as well as real-time traffic updates.

Because GPS tracking solutions increase safety, they can also reduce insurance costs and improve customer satisfaction by providing a safety record your customers can rely on.

Patient Transport Services

Posted by Erin Hodges On August - 19 - 2010

Mobile solutions for patient transport services improve productivity and reduce costsAs we discussed in our June 23rd post, not all healthcare applications occur within the four walls.  Another example of a healthcare service that requires field workers is patient transport services.  Implementing a mobile solution for patient transport services reduces costs and improves productivity by enabling:

  • Web-based dispatching that sends drivers routes to the mobile device
  • Current driver location is tracked in real-time
  • Ability to dispatch the nearest driver
  • Route optimization and turn-by-turn directions
  • Geofencing to alert patient of expected arrival time
  • Pick-up and drop-off location and time entered on an electronic form
  • Signature capture
  • Automatic capture of mileage driven
  • Data is sent to the back office in real-time
  • Extensive reporting
