RFID Retail Inventory Management: Maximizing Efficiency at Fanatics

The Challenge

Effective RFID retail inventory management, speed, accuracy, and the in-venue fan experience are critical in high-volume retail environments. Fanatics, a global digital sports platform supporting live commerce and special events, betting and gaming, and trading cards and collectibles, sought to modernize its in-stadium retail operations as part of a long-range strategy to deliver a best-in-class fan experience.

Operating retail environments where transaction volume peaks within tight gameday windows, Fanatics relied on tightly controlled checkout and inventory processes to protect revenue, reduce shrink, and keep associates focused on the fan, not the transaction. As the company evaluated its existing point-of-sale and inventory workflows, it identified an opportunity to implement RFID technology that could improve inventory accuracy, accelerate inventory cycle counts, reduce checkout bottlenecks, and provide greater inventory visibility across operations.

Barrier and Impact

Fanatics faced several operational challenges that introduced friction into its RFID retail inventory management workflow and the overall customer experience:

  • Slow inventory cycle counts – Counts required six to eight hours to complete, limiting how often they could be performed and increasing the risk of inventory discrepancies, shrink, and inaccurate inventory data.
  • Checkout congestion – Traditional barcode-based checkout processes created bottlenecks during high-traffic gameday periods, increasing wait times and slowing transaction speed.
  • Labor allocation constraints – As many as ten associates were required at the point of sale during peak periods, reducing the number of team members available to support fans on the sales floor.
  • Manual process risk – Item-by-item barcode scanning introduced opportunities for missed reads, inventory discrepancies, and inconsistent checkout experiences.
  • Future-state alignment – Fanatics’ long-range technology roadmap required a scalable, best-in-class solution capable of supporting future growth rather than incremental improvements to legacy workflows.

Together, these challenges highlighted the need for a comprehensive RFID retail inventory management strategy that could accelerate checkout, improve inventory accuracy, increase inventory visibility, and support long-term retail modernization initiatives.

The Solution

As the lead integrator, DecisionPoint Technologies (DPT) worked with Fanatics and its technology partners to design and implement an integrated RFID retail inventory management solution that modernized both checkout and inventory operations.

The solution brought together Zebra RFID technology, EXO inventory management software, RFID labeling, and POSitive Technology point-of-sale integration to create a unified retail workflow built for speed, accuracy, and scalability.

Key components of the solution included:

1. Zebra RFID Technology

The RFID infrastructure included Zebra fixed RFID readers, handheld RFID devices, RFID-enabled printers, and RFID tags to support faster RFID retail inventory management, automated item identification, and improved inventory visibility.

2. Inventory Visibility and Management

EXO inventory management software helped provide greater visibility into inventory operations, supporting more accurate tracking, more frequent inventory audits, and better control over stock movement.

3. RFID-Enabled Checkout and POS Integration

POSitive Technology supported the RFID-enabled checkout experience, allowing merchandise to be automatically identified and processed without individual barcode scans.

4. RFID Labeling and Printing

RFID-enabled desktop and industrial printing supported accurate labeling and item-level identification across retail operations.

Together, these technologies enabled Fanatics to eliminate line-of-sight barcode scanning at checkout, standardize inventory counting processes, and integrate RFID capabilities into existing point-of-sale workflows.

The Outcome

The implemented solution delivered measurable improvements across inventory management, checkout performance, labor allocation, and the overall fan experience:

  • Approximately 85% faster inventory counts – Inventory counts that previously required six to eight hours were completed in approximately one hour, enabling more frequent cycle counts and improved inventory accuracy.
  • 70% reduction in point-of-sale staffing requirements – Checkout staffing requirements decreased from ten associates to three, allowing seven team members to be redeployed to customer-facing roles on the sales floor.
  • Faster checkout experience – Customers could place merchandise into an RFID-enabled checkout station where items were automatically identified and processed within seconds.
  • Greater inventory visibility – RFID technology enabled more frequent inventory audits and improved visibility into inventory operations, helping reduce discrepancies and shrink risk.
  • Improved associate experience – Team members responded positively to the new technology and the ability to spend more time supporting customers.
  • Scalable foundation for future growth – The RFID infrastructure positions Fanatics to expand RFID-enabled capabilities across additional venues and retail environments.

Key Takeaway

By integrating RFID across checkout, inventory management, mobility, and labeling workflows, Fanatics improved inventory accuracy, accelerated inventory counts, reduced labor requirements, and created a faster customer experience.

The project demonstrates how optimizing your RFID retail inventory management operations can help retailers improve operational efficiency, increase inventory visibility, reduce shrink risk, and build a scalable foundation for future growth.

“As we look at our long-range plan, we’re looking at best-in-class technology. We feel RFID is going to get us there. That’s why Fanatics is an early adopter of this program. We are not going to be fast followers.”
